Book Review: THE SEARCH: A Dust Bowl Love Story by Tiffani Velez
Author Tiffani Velez’s entire body of impressive works has the power to transport the reader seamlessly through time and place. Her newest historical fiction, a romance/thriller, THE SEARCH: A Dust Bowl Love Story, is no exception. It is a well-written and disarming novel during America’s 1930’s Great Depression and Dust Bowl. The Depression left countless lives utterly devastated and broken, much as the Dust Bowl did to the drought-stricken Southern Plains, where choking dust storms left crops to fail, livestock to die, and people penniless, homeless, and hopeless. Countless people found themselves faced with absolute ruin, and as a result, many people and dreams perished.
While gripping and romantic, this story still managed to tackle a host of significant issues: poverty, unemployment, prejudice, anti-Semitism, bigotry, and despair, but also friendship, love, trust, and reclamation. I especially enjoy the author’s warm yet disarming writing style as she unpacks her character’s intense backstories while laying their uncertainties, thoughts, and souls bare.
THE SEARCH: A Dust Bowl Love Story is an excellent novel, and I unabashedly admit to not being able to put this book down until its completion. I shed many tears, laughed, and swooned as life, loss, and hope collided in this beautiful, timeless story.
Highly recommended. 5-Stars.
